Central Kansas Library System (CKLS) offers a variety of services to insure materials are processed for maximum accessibility for library patrons. Effective 05/06/2025 CKLS will process books in the following ways:
Paperback books, new or used, with a spine less than 12mm will not be covered with laminate. We will be happy to catalog, attach a spine label, spine label protector and library barcode protector. This includes Scholastic thin paperbacks.
Paperback books with yellowed pages may be cataloged (depending on age) have a spine label, spine label protector and library barcode protector attached. The paperback will not be laminated.
Paperback books in the following condition will not be processed: evidence of pest infestation, torn covers, water damage, excessive odor, warped, bent or creased covers, and any other conditions that make the book unusable.
Hardcover books in the following condition will not be processed: evidence of pest infestation, water damage, mold, excessive odor, warped covers, broken spines, slightly torn covers, yellowed pages (depending on age), cobwebs, dirt and other markings and other conditions that make the book unusable.
Each book will be based on its merit and condition.
If your library would like to cover the items, CKLS offers laminate and Mylar book jackets in a variety of sizes at a reduced rate. There are many excellent videos on how to cover books on the Internet.
Books donated by CKLS to libraries will have new spine labels and barcodes attached. In some cases the outer jacket will be removed if the book has a printed cover in better condition.
